Gallery:A82 Loch Lomond
Back into the jungle again. Only mad SABRISTI venture this far!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680This section, so close to the loch shore, must've been quite nerve-wracking going south, especially in the dark and/or in a large vehicle

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680And remains so for a few hundred yards
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680It gradually opens out again
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680The white object is a large rock, presumably dislodged from the embankment of the existing A82.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680This stretch is very close to the shore of the Loch
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680Such is the rate of growth that the road width is down to a few feet in places. It gets narrower...
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680The cycletrack does seem to be well used. the day I was there I saw several using it, at least between Balloch and Luss, less so from Luss to Tarbet
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 14, 2007 by leopard680The existing A82 is just on the other side of the gate on the left

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 14, 2007 by leopard680This stretch is totally deserted apart from a few cyclists. The guy in the car just visible was fast asleep. Maybe he's a SABRISTI too, and knows where to go for some peaceful shut-eye!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 14, 2007 by leopard680Between Rubha Bahn & Rubha Dubh, the white lines remain quite fresh in places
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680Humans can be seen again!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680The old road over Luss bridge is very wide at this point. I don't know if this was for overtaking or parking purposes, as Luss has always been a popular spot, and didn't always have the big car park it now has.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680Hope the residents don't mind it appearing on this website! Purely to illustrate the old road running past it. Looks a smashing place to have a cottage.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680Hope the residents don't mind. It's a beautiful looking cottage with some lovely views.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680The A82 is signed as a 60mph single carriageway rather than NSL north of Alexandra.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680This stretch would've offered travellers their first tantalising views of Loch & ben Lomond on their drive north
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680The combination of this series of bends and open views of the loch must've made this an accident blackspot
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680Series of bends around Rhuba Mohr are remarkably vegetation free
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680Lower reaches of Ben Lomond on the other side of the loch
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680You can just make out the line of the road round this promontory, and the sheer drop into the loch of about 12 feet from the road.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680Looking south towards Firkin Cottage
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680Going south, there is a drop of around 12 feet from the road surface to the loch. Presumably there would've been barriers though when the road was in use.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680The views from the road up the loch are superb
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680The surface here remains excellent and is hardly overgrown at all
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 06, 2007 by leopard680To the south of Luss
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680South of Luss. Although not immediately apparent, this is the old A82 alignment. The clue is the wall, and the alignment which is about the right width. Despite being resurfaced as a cyclepath, the vegetated area to the right is flat before rising to the new road embankment
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 13, 2007 by leopard680North of Drumkinnon Cottage, the surface looks more original, although it's still pretty smooth at this point. The wooded nature of this stretch, particularly in view of the fact that it isn't trimmed back, make for an idyllic atmosphere. Further along it's like driving through a green tunnel.
