Crossroads, Baltasound
A new build which replaced a listed corrugated iron 'tin' house, which was badly damaged by fire. The crossroads after which the house was named were realigned in the 1990s, as they were not perfectly straight and more than once cars hit the original tin house, one collision moving the house several inches on its foundations. The crossroads are, therefore, staggered these days, with the left turn to the head of the voe on the left of the photo and the right turn towards the school and the leisure centre just to the right of the photo.

'Steaming road' at Swinister (C) Mike Pennington
On a day of sunshine and showers, a sharp shower here beside Dales Voe is making the road 'steam' with water vapour rising off the road. Given the relatively low temperatures of air and road in Shetland this seems rather surprising.

Mid Yell- the A968 heads for West... (C) Chris Downer
Looking along the A968, the main road across the island from Ulsta to Gutcher. It is along this stretch that the road crosses from the west side of Yell to the east.

Swinister- orphaned segment of the A968 The course of the road has clearly been realigned over the years, leaving this tiny strip of tarmac to lay disused and inaccessible.
Sheep pund beside Loch of Snarravoe All gathered up with no-one to tend them; the crofters were along a few minutes later to deal with them.
