Point where the D2 Wincanton bypass started, before the extension eastwards to Mere opened in 1992. It curved around by the bushes, widening from S2 to D2.

Old sign on the old B3081 - Coppermine - 19905.jpg
Old sign on the old B3081

I expect this signpost has survived, even without a modern addition, because the B3081 was re-routed at this point about 30 years ago. It now takes a route a mile or so south of here, amid several TOTSOs and a short multiplex with the B3078. We are looking west immediately south of Cranborne village.

Laybys are great for stopping in and selling Strawberries and all along the A303 every one of them has a seller making an honest living selling warm fruit, Any way back to this road and pre 1992 this was the old A303 heading west towards Wincanton now B3081 road and more of a polite way to travel into town and Gentalmen in there open top sports cars can tip there caps at horse riders as they pass by .. Old A303 that was east of Bourton.

Sixpenny Handley (6 old pence) - Coppermine - 17424.jpg
Sixpenny Handley (6 old pence)

The traditional Dorset finial on this sign gives the location and grid reference. The location, Sixpenny Handley, is shown as '6d Handley'.

It is one of those signs that is rather prone to being stolen, and you can see that parts of it have been replaced.

Sixpenny Handley- finger-post finial detail A close-up of the finial of the finger-post, giving location and grid reference details. The village name is locally famous for being abbreviated to '6d Handley' on many old signposts and I think this finial has been restored heavily over the years, perhaps owing to sporadic thefts.
