Exe A361

Geddit? Er, anyway, the junction of A396 and old A361, now B3227.

Looking west. The priority is from A396 n. to B3227 w. I can't remember if that was always the case. Logically, the A361 would have had priority, as that was the busiest route.

Picture of the B3227 near Taunton. This is also a classic example of an oxbow road.

Incorrect Sign - Coppermine - 6675.jpg
Incorrect Sign

Location: Newtown Service Station, A361 / B3227. This sign is wrong for two reasons: Firstly, the sign is located on the B3227 and while the Barnstaple road is close, the road south is about a mile and a half away. Secondly, the top sign seems to imply that Tiverton and Taunton are reached using the M5, while Exeter can be reached by staying on the A361.

Old A361

Now the B3227. Looking west, a few miles west of Wiveliscombe. The layby forming the original bend. So quiet here, a car passes every few minutes or so.

Even the garages have returned to nature. Looking east, just outside Bampton.

Bampton - Coppermine - 14656.jpg
Bampton

A traditional filling station with attended service, that probably goes back to the earliest days of motoring.

Bampton

Looking east at perhaps the shortest one-way system in the land. This would have been jammed solid in summers, before the NDLR opened in late 1988.

Old A361

Descending into the Exe valley. The A396 is about 100' below the trees. One of several hairpins on the old route from Taunton to South Molton.

Black Cat - Coppermine - 14651.jpg
Black Cat

Looking south. The Black Cat garage is closed down but, remains intact, another frozen in time scenario. The house above is a cafe but, opening times seem obscure. A good place for owners of vintage vehicles to take period photographs.

Looking east across the river to the junction. House cafe visible.

Exe ex. A361 - Coppermine - 14649.jpg
Exe ex. A361

View from a bridge, to the complex junction. I recall an August journey in the late 60's, when every road here was locked solid with holiday traffic. Now all you can hear is the burbling of the River Exe.
