Holborn Circus - Coppermine - 13265.jpg
Holborn Circus

Taken from the end of one of Britain's shortest B roads, the B500 Charterhouse Street. The photo is taken from Zone 5. The statue is in the middle of the A40. The glass building is Sainsbury's HQ and is in Zone 4 (the A40 runs to the right of it (westbound)) and the A4 starts just behind the statue, running between the brick building and Sainsbury's. The brick building is therefore technically in zone 3, though before the A4 was re-routed via New Fetter Lane, it would have been in zone 4.

Taken from the Farringdon Street end, the full length of the B500 is visible in this view: the building visible through the bridge is the Sainsbury's Head Office on the other side of Holborn Circus. The bridge (now gone - see photos later in this album) is part of the De Beers diamond traders' complex. Note the griffin marking the boundary of the City of London

Taken from the top deck of a No 45 bus, just leaving Holborn Circus. The cream coloured building visible through the bridge is on the other side of Farringdon Street, at the start of the (now unclassified) continuation of Charterhouse Street, up the hill to Smithfield meat market. The side road on the left is Ely Place.

Not such a good vantage point, but with more time to compose the shot! One of the gatehouses of Ely Place can be seen in this view. The taxi behind the bus is at the Farringdon Street junction. Traffic congestion in this street is much worse since the City of London closed off Shoe Lane/St Bride Street - but this is a Camden street, so perhaps the City doesn't mind! Note that of the eleven vehicles in this queue, only one is liable for the congestion charge!

Farringdon Street at Junction of Snow Hill - West Smithfield
Looking north towards the junction of Charterhouse Street. The driver of the white van is doing the typical London style right turn -- as the traffic from the right on the main road slows down, push halfway out and wait for someone to let you complete your turn. Most drivers here anticipate it and they usually cooperate, but you could have a problem if they don't...
