Esslemont Castle The castle was held by the Marischal family in the 14th century, and came into the Cheyne family by marriage. Later it passed to the Erroll family, and finally to the Gordons, before being abandoned in the 18th century. The existing building is a Renaissance-style tower house, and it stands on the remains of the earlier buioding. It is surrounded by a ditch which may also date from the 14th century.
