Reloaded after I decided to crop the picture...
I've broken with tradition and submitted a foreign picture, naughty me! However, this was taken towards the end of the motoring holiday me and SarahJ had in September, on the way back to Calais where we spent our last night before going home the following day. It was a particularly lovely sunset.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Nov 08, 2009 by SDLThis is close to the German border so signs and posters could be in any one of three languages. For example the yellow poster on the right has Sunday in German and French but only the German spelling of Belgium. The one above it has the English spelling of New.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 07, 2009 by TruveloMaubeuge has been blanked out because the R5 Ring Road around Mons is incomplete and there's no direct route via this exit. This is what happens when you put up a sign before the road is built.
Also notice a replacement light column in the distance with an Eleco shaped bowl.

Also check out the huge SOX lantern attached to the wall of the terraced houses, all of which have roller shutters over the windows. Is crime really that bad?

Old ADS near Gent?I know brynn likes belguim motorways, so here is one for him
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 30, 2006 by SarahJBelgium appears to favour Euroroute numbers over their own motorway designations. The E40 here is also part of Belgium's A18, but you'd be hard-pressed to find any direction signs with 'A18' on them. The kilometre posts, however, show the A number.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 17, 2006 by csdBelgium has recently placed copies of fork signs in the central reservation. Handy if lane 1 is choked with trucks, and cheaper than a gantry. Wonder what it does for the safety record, though. Agree with IPJ1: the drivers in Belgium are truly awful!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 17, 2006 by csdThis used to be the classic example of where the smooth Dutch surface gave way to the Belgian farce. But no more in fact, the Belgians must have done a spot of resurfacing here?

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1The E40 (A10/A12) has long connected the UK with the Low Countries and much of Central Europe. Three-lane and well-serviced for most of its length, but watch the drivers...!

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1Although perhaps not clear in this photo in western Brussels, the green sign to the right says 'Gand-Gent (GB)'. Is this the only instance of the UK being signed from the Continent?
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1The Brussels Ring is not complete as a ring - south of Brussels it disappears well off to the south. The result is that although the direct route from Brussels to Namur is the A4, if you leave from the west the signage takes you down the A7 and along the A54 (a kind of 'POBO'?) - this is the A7.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1Martelange is well south down the N4, at the end of a fairly long expressway section. Road surfaces in Belgium vary hugely - this wasn't too bad, but some have gone unresurfaced for decades, and it shows.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1With the exception of a small exclave in the west of the country, signage in Wallonia is wholly in French. Destinations in other countries - but not in Flanders - are given in the local language in brackets.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1The town of Athus near Arlon is a true border town - in Belgium, it borders both France and (the Grand Duchy of) Luxembourg directly.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2005 by IJP1The Belgo-French border - we're in Belgium, but nearly all the destinations at the roundabout are in France.
