Recently, this junction is gone. A building is being constructed on the bit of Bond street below centre. Taken in 1989 from the 19th floor of Castlemead. (this is the Jcn of the A4044 & A 4032 off to right which morphs into the m32 within a mile )

On every other sign Bristol Zoo is a tourist attraction, and singned in white-on-brown - like the @ Bristol at the top. I don't know what went wrong here though! The current sign is stuck over something else, but I can't tell what.

The primary route we are on totsos at this junction, so I'm not certain the signs are the correct colour either.

1970s M5 Gordano Valley - Flickr - 5064873852.jpg
The familiar stretch of the M5 motorway, between Bristol & Clevedon, under construction.

This contract, which commenced in April 1970, was let to Cementation Ltd. for a tender sum £5.7m.

It started at the south abutment of the Avonmouth Bridge and extended to Clapton Wick in the Clevedon Hills.

It included the construction of the elevated roundabout interchange with the A369 at Portbury and the adjacent Service Area. On sidelong ground in the hills the works were mainly in rock cutting in massive limestone. In order to accommodate the sidelong ground the two carriageways were constructed at separate levels which varied up to 30 feet. In order to support the lower northbound carriageway a crib wall comprised of interlocking precast concrete units infilled with rock was built and to support the higher carriageway a reinforced concrete retaining wall, tied back with rock anchors, was used.

To cross over two adjacent valleys at Wynol Farm twin parallel prestressed viaducts, some 1600 ft long and up to 100 ft high were built and are a feature of this length of Motorway. Access to the site of the viaduct was extremely difficult. In all nine new bridges and 1.5 m cu.yds. of excavation, of which 60% was rock, were required on this 5 miles of M5.

M5, November 1972

Other parts of the country may have seen major advances in the motorway network over the last 2 years but, in the West Country, it is still business as usual. However, the M5 is marching south and, reached Bristol on Dec 3 1971. Gradually, the locals are waking up to the changes this road will bring in its wake.

M5, April 1973 - Coppermine - 19785.jpg
M5, April 1973

M5 progress suffers a major setback at Avonmouth bridge, because of the box girder scare 2 years ago. J19-J20, Clevedon had opened in 1970, no use to A38 users, as it ended miles from any A road. J20-22 has just opened in January 73 but, that is where the A38 joins it from Bristol. How was the traffic signed during this interim period, A369 to J19, A370 to J21 or, A38 to J22, where the M5 ended ?

The final design for Three Lamps Interchange dated from 1973 shortly before the project was canned. By now the layout was a lot simpler than the previous design.

Feeder Road Later Design.png
Layout of Feeder Road Interchange which would have connected the road of that name to the Outer Circuit Road. This is the later design for the junction which had changed to a trumpet. The trumpet would have initially ended on Feeder Road at a T-junction but at least one plan shows a proposal for a large 6-arm roundabout.
Feeder Road Early Design.png
Early design for Feeder Road Interchange as part of the Bristol Outer Circuit Road. The plan soon changed to a trumpet and remained so until plans to build the road were abandoned.
Outer Circuit Road.png
Early plan for Bristol Outer Circuit Road showing the original route and junction layouts from around the mid 1960s. At this time there would have been breaks in the grade separation at the M32 and Bedminster with the Outer Circuit Road giving way at the roundabouts. The route between Three Lamps and Coronation Road also takes a more southerly line compared to later versions from the late 1960s onwards.
