Flooded Broadway underpass, Belfast - Coppermine - 19629.jpg
Flooded Broadway underpass, Belfast

Broadway underpass on the A12 Westlink filled with dirty river water to a depth of about 15 feet at 1pm on Sunday 17 August 2008. You can see the high water mark from the previous evening. A nearby river overwhelmed its culvert and filled the underpass around tea time on Saturday. There's going to be a lot of silt and other debris to remove from the underpass, including (by rumour) abandoned vehicles.

Flooded Broadway underpass, Belfast

Broadway underpass on the A12 Westlink filled with water to a depth of about 15 feet at 1pm on Sunday 17 August 2008. Engineers have been pumping the water out for about ten hours at this point, and are cleaning the tarmac ahead. The police removed the central reservation as an emergency measure to get vehicles away, and this is also being repaired. A nearby river overwhelmed its culvert and filled the underpass around tea time on Saturday.

There's rumoured to be a number of abandoned vehicles still down there.

The sign, in Glenmachan Street, on the approach to the Broadway roundabout over the Westlink underpass J3273 : The Westlink, Belfast (19). This one needs more than a bit of thought especially if you happen to be a first-timer.

See J3273 : The Westlink, Belfast (18). The Broadway underpass J3273 : The Westlink, Belfast (17) opened on 4 July with two lanes available for traffic in each direction. The official announcement made much of an opening well ahead of target. This ignored, however, the fact that the overall scheme is not complete. The effect of the opening is that there is now a straight run through from York Street J3475 : The Westlink, York Street, Belfast, without traffic lights or roundabouts, to the M1.

Broadway roundabout, over the underpass, has still to be completed.
