An unusual sign in Ilfracombe - a 'humps' plate with no distance specified.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 12, 2006 by DavidBrownThe sign maker ran out of room when he reached Churchinford (Presumably these signs and lettering were one standard size)
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 23, 2007 by A358TonyThis sign doesn't actually point anywhere.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 01, 2007 by A358TonyWednesday March 23 1993. Speeches are made to officially open the Okehampton BP to Launceston BP section, completing the dualling from M5 to near Bodmin. The clump of trees in the background have since become a landmark on the journey. Looking west. Due to camera failure, I had to use this cheap backup, still at least it actually worked!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Feb 12, 2007 by SteveA30Looking west, where the link to the old e/bnd side, runs under the new. The once notorious Iron Bridge, where the old A30 went, can be seen beyond.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 12, 2007 by SteveA30Right hand arm should simply say 'Witheridge B3137', road is B3137 not (B3137), South Molton & Rackenford are signed (quite rightly) on all other signs in town via A361, road to Rackenford ceased to be B3221 in 1988 & isn't/was never B3222!, roundabout is a mini-roundabout. Sign effectively 17-years out of date the day it was put up! (Old sign was correct!)

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 05, 2006 by DavidBrownLooking south, where the A38 veers off to the right to join the M5 at J27. It was the A373 to Tiverton. A38 used to go left to Cullompton, now its the B3181. Only a rbt since about 1999 ish, before that it was main line to the M5 but, I would imagine before the M5, it would have been priority for the A38 on to Exeter left. Building beyond small van was one of the earliest Little Chef closures, around 1976, when the M5 opened from J26 to J27 here. Its now a craft centre and coffee shop.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 03, 2007 by SteveA30Taken from exactly the same place as an earlier PotM, but looking in the other direction. Lets hope a sunny photo gets us some sunny weather...
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 23, 2007 by DavidBrownLooking east across the river to the junction. House cafe visible.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 08, 2007 by SteveA30View from a bridge, to the complex junction. I recall an August journey in the late 60's, when every road here was locked solid with holiday traffic. Now all you can hear is the burbling of the River Exe.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 08, 2007 by SteveA30Looking west. The priority is from A396 n. to B3227 w. I can't remember if that was always the case. Logically, the A361 would have had priority, as that was the busiest route.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 08, 2007 by SteveA30Geddit? Er, anyway, the junction of A396 and old A361, now B3227.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 08, 2007 by SteveA30Descending into the Exe valley. The A396 is about 100' below the trees. One of several hairpins on the old route from Taunton to South Molton.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 08, 2007 by SteveA30Blackmoor Gate how it used to be in the 1980's. The A39 had priority then, whereas the A399 does now. The big holiday route sign directed 'Light Holiday Traffic' to Ilfracombe and Lynton. Sorry it isn't very clear - the picture is acually on an information sign, which can be found at Blackmoor Gate today.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 13, 2006 by DavidBrownThe link from the old A30 to the old A38, left here. It was a T junction in the olden days. Original A30 went straight on into Exeter. The bridge carrying the bypass, is in the distance. Sept 14 2008
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 18, 2008 by SteveA30Looking south from the Kennford GSJ. Old A38, now n/bnd A380 on right. N/bnd A38 in middle. S/bnd A38/A380 on left, splitting to 2 lanes for each. Old garage visible in background.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 27, 2007 by SteveA30Just after leaving M5, A38 on-slip on left.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 27, 2007 by SteveA30The A390 will probably become a dead end from here, as the new route from the rbt is just ahead, beyond the white lorry in the distance, bypassing the low rly. bridge as well.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 26, 2007 by SteveA30Looking across the site camp to the A390, from the A38. The new will cross at high level to bridge the rly. just visible, above the huts.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 26, 2007 by SteveA30The exact point where the A303 gives way to the A30 at Upottery in Devon. The end of the red paint would appear to mark the spot. Looking east. Annie's Tea Bar layby in distance.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 18, 2007 by SteveA30Looking west. Road layout unchanged for at least 4 decades, apart from the red paint and newer signs. Nice to see such a thing these days.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 03, 2007 by AAndyNot a clear photo but east devon uses these white wooden signs a lot.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 04, 2005 by multiraider2In other news, A30 traffic returned in force to the C50 as it has been since May 1978, on Sept 11 2009, after an accident closed the e/bnd side from Tedburn St Mary. This is Pocombe Corner, only 1 mile from the edge of Exeter. Queues were commonplace here in the 60's and 70's.
