Note the new gantry-mounted VMS on the southbound carriageway. The M1 is the longest continuous stretch of motorway on the island of Ireland. At 72 km it's longer than its Northern Ireland namesake (which is 61 km long). The M1 will be extended by a further 11 km in early 2006 with the opening of its final section, the Dundalk Western bypass.

These were installed recently, presumably to give drivers advance warning of problems with the Dublin Port tunnel, due to open early 2006. To my knowledge, these are the only VMSs of this type anywhere in the Republic.
