Salzburg lies right on the German border, and is easily accessible straight from it.

The A8 just east of Stuttgart and just before the big dip - Geislingen (on the sign), among other things, is Juergen Klinsmann's home town.

Die Autobahn durch den Wald - Germany is heavily forested and this is a typical scene.

I got lucky here to get the spectacular nightfall. The sign is in fact misleading - the exit leads only to the A81 *south*, the A81 *north* is actually straight on and accessed three junctions later. But don't let that detract from the view!

Here the best and worst of the world's most famous motorway network - a superb view and a good surface through a major dip ahead, but no hard shoulder.

The southeastern A8 is not just the main route from Munich to Salzburg (and indeed from southern Bavaria to much of Central and Southern Europe), it is also the main route between the two Austrian cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck (where in links with the A93 here). Therefore, to be blunt, two lanes each way is just a nonsense!

Neu Ulm is just in Bavaria, unlike Ulm which is in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The boundary is around here somewhere...

To end the big dip, a superbly engineered tunnel.

This area, popularized rather unfortunately by a certain German Leader in the 30s, is known as the 'German Corner' as, on the map, it seems to chip into Austria (and indeed provides the main connection between many pairs of Austrian centres - most cars you see are Austrian and this section of the A8 always features on Austrian traffic reports).

The 'German Corner' comes to an end soon, as Bavaria gives way to Salzburg.

Two accidents in a roadwork zone, never a good combination - this time on the A8 westbound approaching Munich.

This is where it all went wrong - not much moved here for a while, as the A8/A93 intersected right at the centre of Europe.

The A81 has moved somewhat - formerly following the route of the A81/A831 route direct towards Stuttgart, it now 'multiplexes' and heads west of Stuttgart. The signage is not clear about that, though.
