Among the geared MA90s on Front Lane is this lone GR100 installed on a CU Arc 2D column. I would imagine all the installations installed on Front Lane were like this at one time - perhaps this installation was newer than the rest at the time and so it was left untouched. Or perhaps the council was just being its weird self and missing some installations!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 02, 2009 by RojojnrMargate Road also used to have a lot of newer GR150s installed on these standard type Stainton columns. A fair few still remain, but those specimens where these installations were common (around the entrance to the QEQM hospital) have been retrofitted with Arcs. Again, make the most of this while you can!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrCliff Avenue, off Sea View Road, is lit by Eleco SR Juniors on a mixture of concrete stump brackets and sleeve brackets. The Eleco SR Junior (on concretes or steel hockeysticks) is Herne Bay's staple side street lantern, although XGS103s or Beta 5s on sleeved concrete columns is also very common. I have a feeling, judging by the shape of the bracket, that some kind of flourescent lantern was installed here originally, but I may be wrong!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 15, 2008 by RojojnrWhile my trainer went out to get electrical bits, I wandered up the street and took a picture of this on corner of the main road. This is the same as the other I took a picture of, but still has it's bowl, and looks brilliant at night! All it needed to be fantastic was a swan-neck bracket.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Feb 07, 2007 by True YorkieA true survivor can be found in front of the Premier Travel Inn on the A1306 just past the M25 junction! This is an Eleco GR200 installed on a sleeved concrete column! It sadly does not work, but it is still here, battling its way through the elements! For how much longer, I simply don't know! Not long I fear...
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 16, 2008 by RojojnrNot very common at all on Birchington's side roads - this Eleco GR550 on an unsleeved Stanton column is very much a loner on Cross Road, off Epple Road. I know of only one other example, and that is near where I took the photo of the gear-in-shoe Z8896. This example is much cleaner than the other, however!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 16, 2008 by RojojnrOn the corner of Slewins Lane and Butts Green Road, this Eleco GR100 is sitting comfortably on a sleeved concrete column.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 28, 2009 by RojojnrThis is by far the best installation on Eddington Lane! It's an Eleco HW918 (Silver Ray Junior) and I think it still runs mercury, as I've seen many of these around Herne Bay still running mercury! A classic installation!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 02, 2009 by RojojnrAt least I think it's an HW745! Another classic long-bracket concrete installation on Fencepiece Road!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 22, 2009 by RojojnrJust a little earlier on, we were at the end of this road at the Chigwell Road Junction. Now, we're at the other end at the junction of Woodford Avenue (lit by black ZX2s). This time, two GR100s on older columns can be seen!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 22, 2009 by RojojnrWow, I didn't realise this was still here! Eleco GR550s were once a common sight on Redbridge's side streets, but now I think this is the only street which still has them in situ (except for a private road in Gants Hill). These must be at least 30 or so years old!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 22, 2009 by RojojnrThis is the end of Roding Lane South at the junction of Chigwell Road, many installations on which I pictured previously. Here, two GR100s and a casual replacement MA50 in the background can be seen! Lovely to see them all still standing!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 22, 2009 by RojojnrThis is the staple Epping Forest installation (around this part of it anyway) - an Eleco HW745 lantern mounted upon a CU Arc 2D concrete column. I'm well chuffed that they're still standing and going strong in 2009 - just goes to show you what not replacing installations can do!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 22, 2009 by RojojnrWow, what a scene! A quick look down Upminster Road off New Road reveals a scene of nothing but Eleco GR100s installed on what I assume are S&L columns! Not a single casual replacement anywhere! Let's just hope that this scene lasts for a good long time into the future!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 02, 2009 by RojojnrCanterbury Road is lit predominantly with GR150s on S&L columns, this time painted green and with longer brackets. Simply lovely! As usual, MAs, SGS203s and Iridiums can also be seen as casual replacements, but, as many of the GR150s are still in place, I'm not complaining!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 14, 2008 by RojojnrHerne Bay High Street is lit mostly by these fantastic Eleco GR150s on black-painted S&L columns, although MA50s and SGS203 casual replacements also make an appearance on plain steel columns. Up until recently, I think the S&Ls had some sort of coloured lighting installed on them, but they now seem to have been removed. The clip for the lights on this column is still in place about three-quarters of the way up the column, if you look carefully!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 14, 2008 by RojojnrThis is the second surviving double-bracket column on the A13, with a GR150 installed on the London-bound carriageway and an Alpha 4 on the Essex-bound carriageway. I would imagine there were originally 2 GR150s on this column - the Alpha 4 is probably a 1980s/90s casual replacement. The single-bracket column in the background I have pictured before and has an MA50 installed on it! A very 1970s-looking view indeed!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 14, 2008 by RojojnrWhilst stopped at the traffic lights at the nearby Ship and Shovel junction on the A13, I zoomed in to that GR150 on the 1970s bracket for a great close-up! If you look a little way below where the horizontal part of the bracket starts, you can see a join, which shows that either this is not the original bracket to the column, or it may be a painted sleeved concrete! I'm pretty sure, however, that the GR150 would be the original lantern to the column.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrThis is only one of a kind left on Margate Road, and thus has survived several replacement schemes! This is a GR150 lantern mounted on a tall sleeved Eleco concrete column. There used to be a lot of these on the remainder of Margate Road towards Ramsgate, but, as you can guess, most of them have been lost to Arcs! Make the most of this while you can!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrGarlinge High Street is lit its entire length by these Eleco GR535 lanterns on steel hockeysticks. This is probably one of the only side streets that is still predominantly SOX lit on the whole of the Thanet - I will keep my eye on it! I'm not sure about the black smoke you can see in the picture - I think it's probably Manston Airport having a fire drill or something!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrJust up the road from the previous installation is another GR150, but installed on a Stainton column. There used to be some of this type of installation in Redbridge, but they are sadly now all gone to ZX3s.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrMargate Road used to have a lot of GR150s and S&L columns, but both are now decreasing rapidly, both on this road and on the Thanet in general. However, here is a best of both worlds installation on a relatively untouched section of the road which still has a lot of these on it! Make of this while you can, because they are disappearing very rapidly!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrThis Eleco GR100 is comparatively newer than the other installations on the road, and is probably a casual replacement from the mid 80s, judging by its immaculate condition. I think, therefore, it may have been one of the last GRs installed before Eleco met their demise in the mid 80s.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 17, 2008 by RojojnrApologies for the slightly cut-off lantern (which is ironic as the lantern is an SOX one) but you can just make out that it's an Eleco GR150 installed on a curved column. This is the same type columns I pictured in West Bay with SGS203s fitted on them - sadly, however, here this column is only one of two which still remains! I think the sun certainly adds some holiday mood to this photo!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 06, 2008 by RojojnrThis GR150 is only one of two which are left surviving on London Road - the road running from the A299 into Ramsgate town centre. It can be found lighting the first roundabout after the ferry terminal. Oddly enough, the S&L columns on the road have not been replaced - they have instead been painted blue and retrofitted with Arcs, as you'll see shortly!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 06, 2008 by RojojnrHere's an Eleco GR550 installed on the same type of Fabrikat hockeystick as the Z8832. I think this would probably be the original lantern to this column, as I've seen a couple more of these in Birchington in the past, but I'm not entirely sure! There's another example a bit further down the road in the photograph.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 23, 2008 by RojojnrHere's another picture of the lantern at daytime, showing the elegance of the installation.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Feb 07, 2007 by True YorkieThis ELECO 'Way' post-top (on concrete column) uses an 80w mercury (or 70w metal-halide) lamp. Whilst there's no concentration of light on the road, the light is a good quality (not awful orange SON) and illuminates the general area so residents can see to their front doors. Residents have no need to install porch lanterns or floodlights here, so there's a reduction in energy usage, and nocturnal crime is very rare in such well-lit areas.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 29, 2007 by True Yorkieanother eleco 'way' on a stanton column. This is identical to example 1, but is just to show we still have whole streets lit with these still!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 24, 2007 by True YorkieWhile walking down a pleasant estate near Birchington station, I came across this Eleco PT1179 post-top lantern. Judging by the colour of the bowl, I think this probably runs mercury or SON. I have a particular soft spot for this lantern as SOX examples used to light my road before they were replaced by ZX1s in the 1995 PFI! A very lucky survivor, that's all I can say!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 23, 2008 by RojojnrAn Eleco 'way' type post-top is mounted on a Stanton column. The 2-part photocell is sticking out of the base casting on the lantern. These were installed in about the mid 1960's - and run metal-halide lamps nowadays.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 24, 2007 by True YorkieWow, what a survivor! This Eleco GR100 can be found at the other end of Roding Lane South, still installed on its original S&L column, which probably dates back to the early 70s, or maybe even the 60s!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 17, 2008 by RojojnrJust off the A6119, sporting Eleco and sleeve.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 31, 2007 by Bryn666Pelnty of these on the Kiln Farm Industrial grid square in MK. Note the flush connection between the column and the bracket. The main door at the base of the column is also flush. Quite a neat looking column (seen them about with long curved outraches as well in northern Lincolnshire). Shame its looking in a sorry state, decor-wise.
