A46

April 1998 and the new A46 is nearly 2 years old. The layby in the under construction photo, turns out to be an escape lane with sand drag, that has seen some action by the look of it.. All this is now a 50 limit, with Gatsos..

On the A69(T) descending Caponhill before the roundabout near Brampton. The trough at the end of the lane is filled with rough sand to stop vehicles with brake failure. You may see that a few tracks are evident in the sand suggesting it is used.

The rough area on the left is an escape lane designed to slow down any vehicles which 'run away' down this long, steep gradient. The small signs warn road users not to park in the area.
