Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 28, 2008 by MatthewSince the late 1960s this dual carriageway has provided fast access to the Bournemouth conurbation from the A31 at Ringwood.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 03, 2008 by TSThe junction of the A338 town centre by-pass, which becomes the Bournemouth Spur Road heading north to Ringwood, with the A35 east towards Christchurch.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 03, 2008 by TSHeading westbound towards Ringwood down Poulner Hill against an interesting sky.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 03, 2008 by TSLooking east towards Basingstoke, on the section that only became A30 around 1933. Original, later improvement and, M3 in background.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 17, 2007 by SteveA30Looking west. Coach on M3 at J8 just glimpsed in gap in trees.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 17, 2007 by SteveA30Heading east to the first DC after the 2 roads combined. This was the scene of much manic overtaking in the old days. It lasts about a mile, reduced to 1 lane e/bnd. The first of 9 bits of D2 before Camberley, 7 of which survive.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 17, 2007 by SteveA30Looking east. Local traffic for Micheldever or, round to A30 west, turned right here but, gave way to A30(T) Trunk road flows had priority in both directions. Sign for Micheldever visible. This area is hidden behind a rubble mound but, is well worth investigation, in view of its former status on the holiday road to the West.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 18, 2007 by SteveA30Looking from the local turn across the A30 to the area behind the rubble mound. Kerbs still in place. Access to the new A303 is via the old, which is now the w/bnd slip. To Basingstoke via the old then, under the new and along another bit of old A30 as the e/bnd slip. A Porsche shot past seconds after this pic going east. I followed and on reaching a T junction, he had buried it in a tree opposite and was already out and on his mobile, unharmed but, trying to look cool. Snigger.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 18, 2007 by SteveA30View from the A323 from Fleet, formerly the B3011, until about 1972. A T junction in the old days, to keep the A30 flowing.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 17, 2007 by SteveA30Put this one here, Junc 2 of the A3(M) going north. What a great place name Cowplain, sounds like a airline for Mother In Laws lol
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 04, 2007 by SnowmanMoving west to beyond Basingstoke, this is the multiplex with the A33, just before they separate again. M3 is glimpsed in the gap in the trees on left, at J8
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 05, 2007 by SteveA30Approaching the parting of the ways. Note the long right turn lane, provided in a 1960's improvement.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 05, 2007 by SteveA30The long right turn lane was an attempt to ease congestion, as queues for turning traffic were a major problem here.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 05, 2007 by SteveA30This is the point where you felt you really were on the road to the west, having parted from the Southampton traffic. The sign reflects the original set up, whereby the A303 didn't start at the M3 but, further down at Micheldever rbt.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 05, 2007 by SteveA30One of my favourite journeys.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 03, 2005 by MSAJohnnyNote the disused tramlines - is this a unique feature for a single-digit A-road??? :)
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 28, 2005 by DavidBGetting near the end now - note the view of Portsmouth's new Spinnaker Tower
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 28, 2005 by DavidBThe very end of the A3! There used to be a slipway here for the old floating bridge which went across to Gosport.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 28, 2009 by SteveA30Approaching the rbt with the former pub in the middle, where the A325 starts. The A30 was freeflow in both directions in pre M3 days but now naturally, it has lights. Lower and upper left w/bnd and, upper right e/bnd. These cause huge peak hour queues in all directions.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 25, 2009 by SteveA30In the last 2 or 3 years, this pointless hatching has appeared. the end of the D2 is well beyond the brow of the hill and never caused problems when it was a thundering trunk road.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 02, 2008 by SteveA30Heavy traffic held up by the lights in Blackwater.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 02, 2008 by SteveA30The start of the 1960's dual carriageway, looking like it's had the end cut off, which it was, when the rbt was tacked on, in the 80's.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 02, 2008 by SteveA30Where the D2 started, at the original crossroads. Blackwater, Hants.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 02, 2008 by SteveA30Another post M3 addition. Formerly, the wide S2 just widened into a D2, with right turn lanes just before the central reservation started. No hatching or cycle lanes either.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 02, 2008 by SteveA30Approaching the Hawley Roundabout (B3272 or A327 for those who dont like change and still living pre 1992) Simple. Blackwater, Camberley A30 (M3) thats all thats needed as this is a non primary road and is in Hampshire. Surrey seem to like to ignore the M3 and clog up local roads.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 24, 2009 by snowman is backLooking east at Hook, from the bridge over the Waterloo - Bournemouth line. Road made to look ridiculously narrow here, by generous cycle lanes. Formerly a WS2

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 21, 2009 by SteveA30The start of the Basingstoke bypass. A short D2 leads down to the A339 rbt, heading west.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 21, 2009 by SteveA30After a deviation along a rerouted A30, we return to the original bypass, although now u/c The wide bit on the right appeared in the 60's, implying a D2 was on its way. It never progressed beyond this though.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 21, 2009 by SteveA30Still on the now unclassified section, this was once choked with summer queues.
