Leeds - 05 - Clever Planning

The cycle lane here is quite useful. The problem is whichever moron put a direction sign directly behind a bollard on two foot poles.

Another shot of that bit - how very twee. The only cyclist I've ever seen using all this joined the road, ignoring the cycle lights and bypassing this bit of track. I wonder how much all this cost.

Leeds - 02 - City Square cycle lane

One of the exits from the cycle lane around City Square. I'm all for improving access for all modes of transport, but this is ugly, obtrusive and completely unused. It's a cycle lane for the sake of building a cycle lane.

Leeds - 06 - City Centre Loop Sign - Coppermine - 1140.jpg
Leeds - 06 - City Centre Loop Sign

A standard direction sign on the Loop. There shouldn't be two different font sizes for directions here, but what stands out more is a blue motorway patch with no road number in it.

The top end of the cycle lane where it heads up Park Row. Do the traffic lights have to be huge full size ones? They look ridiculous

Leeds - 01 - Old tram line pole

One of the surviving ones that became streetlights in the 60's. Many Leeds radials used to have these, most memorably the A63 up Halton Hill and the A660 through Headingley. These few cling on at Calverley Street, near the University campus

Leeds - 07 - Professional sign production

I think I mentioned this wonder at the Awayday. It's incorrectly designed and fabricated, uses the wrong fonts, symbols and materials (not retroreflective), and is placed a foot lower than its lamp on the pole. Genius.

Taffechan.jpg
The Taf Fechan Bridge carrying the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road north of Merthyr Tydfil. The bridge was completed in mid-1964. It crosses a thickly wooded valley and it's difficult to get a good view of the graceful concrete arch from any angle.
