New Broadway underpass, Belfast - Coppermine - 18989.jpg
New Broadway underpass, Belfast

Travelling towards the M1 from A12 Westlink, Belfast with the newly opened Broadway underpass ahead. The sliproads to the left carried all traffic until last week. This point is now the start of the M1 motorway, which has therefore grown by several hundred metres.

Grosvenor Road junction, Westlink - Coppermine - 13787.jpg
Grosvenor Road junction, Westlink

Work is advancing well on the future underpass at Grosvenor Road, here looking north (towards M2). All traffic is currently driving on each side of the road. This will be a limited-access junction with sliproads only in the south-facing direction. Taken from the temporary flyover. Note the nice edging being added to the flyover.

Westlink from Grosvenor Road

Telephoto shot of the Westlink looking south from the temporary flyover at Grosvenor Road. The future widened Westlink here is really starting to take shape. Eventually it will be 3+3 lanes, plus two hard shoulders. It looks incredibly wide for those of us used to the old 2+2 road with no shoulders!

M1 southbound j1-j2 - Coppermine - 13781.jpg
M1 southbound j1-j2

The widened southbound carriageway of the M1 between j1 and j2 is now completed. However traffic is using lane 1 and the hard shoulder, with lanes 2 and 3 reserved for the works to move the central reservation. Northbound traffic is still on the original carriageway.

Southbound M1 motorway between j1 and j2

What is this? There are three of them being built on the M1 southbound. Are they (a) police lay-bys (b) bases for gantries (c) refuges to future-proof the road for ATM? I am on the future hard shoulder here.

M1 southbound approaching j2 - Coppermine - 13779.jpg
M1 southbound approaching j2

Southbound on the M1, having just gone onto the lane that leads off to junction 2. All traffic currently uses the northbound carriageway. On the left work is clearly taking place for the new position of the sliproads once the road is widened. All widening is taking place on this side due to a nature reserve on the other side.

Leaving the M1 southbound at j2 (Stockman's Lane). All traffic currently uses the future northbound carriageway, so the sliproad crosses the former southbound carriageway.

The M12 was going to be a motorway throughpass for Portadown taking traffic towards Newry and Armagh. It was never completed and the through pass was built as a limited-access wide single carriageway. This is the view west with the M12 diverging from the M1. 1 March 2007.

FOGGY M1 NEAR DUNMURRY

The section of M1 between Belfast (J1) and Lisburn (J6) opened in 1962. It carries about 56,000 vehicles daily. Since opening it had a new limited-access junction with the Blacks Road (J3) added and the hard shoulder on the inward carriageway (right) has been converted to a P/T bus lane for the numerous express services using the road. Work is underway to add an extra lane between Belfast (Broadway) and Stockmans Lane (J2). The view is outward towards Lisburn on a foggy Sunday 4 February 2007.

See J3273 : The Westlink, Belfast (18). The Broadway underpass J3273 : The Westlink, Belfast (17) opened on 4 July with two lanes available for traffic in each direction. The official announcement made much of an opening well ahead of target. This ignored, however, the fact that the overall scheme is not complete. The effect of the opening is that there is now a straight run through from York Street J3475 : The Westlink, York Street, Belfast, without traffic lights or roundabouts, to the M1.
