Here is a typical gantry sign in South Africa - at one of busiest motorway intersections - indicates how the lanes will split at the point of intersection !! Not necc the lanes at the time. Very clear. Also note route numbers ... N1 would be used for example for the whole stretch of national route one - here it happens to be motorway, but could also be freeway.
