A seldom seen view of Northern Ireland's M2 crossing this rural road, outside Mallusk. The geology of the road allowed the picture to be taken almost on level with the motorway.

Optimistic speed limit sign

Don't treat THIS speed limit as a target! The Hightown Road over the M2 in Glengormley is severed for all of 2008 while the bridge is rebuilt to facilitiate motorway widening. On the left is a temporary footbridge.

M2 FORTWILLIAM

The construction of an additional (southbound) lane from Sandyknowes to Greencastle and the closure of the northbound inside lane is having an effect on peak traffic flow. This queue is appx 2 miles long. Taken at 16.35 before the real peak flow had started. 28 September 2007. (This is a daily event M-F).

M2 northbound GLENGORMLEY

The M2 is having an extra lane added (southbound) between Sandyknowes and Greencastle (http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/roads/m2wideningcitybound.html explains in detail). This involves rebuilding several bridges. This is the view north from the Hightown Road with the new bridge taking shape on the left. The inside lane (in effect a crawler lane) is closed. Slow-moving HGVs climbing this steep section can see their speed fall to around 40 (or slower if heavily loaded). Southbound the overtaking lane is closed and the hard shoulder used as a traffic lane. 27 October 2007.

The small junction number plate here is original to the construction of the M2, proving junction numbers were being signed in NI as early as 1969. Also note the original concrete posts that the signs are mounted to.

WHERE THE M22 DROPS A "2" - Coppermine - 10159.jpg
WHERE THE M22 DROPS A '2'

The M2 should have continued north from Dunsilly with the M22 as a branch heading west. That section of the M2 was never built (although an all-purpose dual carriageway was - eventually). The M22 is in the foreground and becomes the M2 at the end of the on-slip on the left. The wide central reservation was to allow the two motorways to merge. View to Belfast on 25 September 2006.

M2, Ballymena - the missing link - Geograph - 190444.jpg
M2, Ballymena - the missing link
When the M2 Ballymena bypass opened in 1969 the intention was to connect it to the Belfast-Antrim section. In the event the plan was abandoned and a dual carriageway was (eventually) built instead over most of the route. This still left a gap at the southern end (seen here). The plan to make a direct connection to the Belfast road has been revived - see D1201 : New dual carriageway, Ballymena (8).
