The preferred route of the M40 between J13 and J14 during the early 1970s was slightly different to how it was built and would have followed the J14 spur with an all movement junction instead of J13. The route as built is shown as a possible alternative and a roundabout GSJ would have been built slightly to the north of the present junction. Like the half diamond that was built it would have had east facing slip roads only.
