Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 16, 2007 by DavidBrownA picture I took of the severn bridge on a trip to Wales back in 2006. It shows some quite murky weather, taken using a disposable camera.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 25, 2007 by AAndyThe former Aust Services basks in the sunshine, as the reason for its later demise lurks in the distance. By the time the sun rose again, the M4 had transferred to the new bridge. Opened in September 1966, along with the first bridge, it closed circa 1999, after Pavilion finally admitted defeat.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2007 by SteveA30A rather less inspiring view. The building and car park survive intact today in private use.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2007 by SteveA30The only structure that hasn't survived is this wonderful covered walkway, completely demolished now. If I had been rich then, I would have bought the whole site as a Road and Transport Heritage Centre, as a base for old vehicle runs. Sigh.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2007 by SteveA30On its last day as a stop on a major route, I had to wait awhile for people to leave to get this clear shot. On later post M4 visits, I was usually one of only 4 or 5 customers, hence its eventual move to a smaller building by the petrol sta. The entrance lobby had great news clippings on the tiled wall, of the opening day on the bridge, showing dozens of overheated cars in the toll queue. People drove from miles just to see the bridge and clogged up the toll booths solid, such was the excitement in those days. Compare that to the relative apathy that greeted the New Bridge opening in 1996.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2007 by SteveA30M4, looking east towards the junction with... the M4. Until tomorrow. The long climb up to Almondsbury can be seen in the distance. A tented stage used for making speeches can also be seen on the e/bnd side. Honestly, the things people dump on motorways.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 16, 2007 by SteveA30June 5 1996, last day of the M4 over the Severn Bridge. This view is from Severn View Services, also history , as the MSA is now private land. The present Services occupies smaller premises slightly inland.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 14, 2007 by SteveA30View from the old Aust Services of the old M4. New M4 barely visible in the heat haze. Remember the telescope just by this spot?
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 14, 2007 by SteveA30The final morning westbound queue at the Toll Booths on the last day of the M4 on this route. Taken from a footbridge over the top of the booths, which I only discovered on this day. It leads down to the Severn on the opposite side to the MSA.
