On the old section of A74 north of Happendon, there are still a few references to non-motorway M74.

Non-standard size M74 label, clearly the sign is older than the label, which has just been plonked on top of, presumably, A74 underneath

3 Generations of A74, Douglas Muir.

As the M74 climbs up from Happendon Services over Douglas Muir (visible on the right), the two previous alignments are just up the hill, as can be seen here. I'm standing on the original. The 1960s road (now B7078) is to the left

At this point the old A74 would've borne over to the right to continue to Lesmahagow. Now it bears round to the left, then goes over the M74 on the bridge visible

Where the A74(M)/M74 changeover happen is now the M6/M74 Change over. The M6 has been extended over the old A74(M). The M6 now has 56 non Suffixed Junctions. J55 nee J14 remains a streched Juction. M74 J13 is now J1. All Juctions of the M74 now start here. The M6 ends here as it just might be extended towards Edinburgh.

Little of note here. the road here has been the same since 1988. However this part of the road has the new M74 Numbers introduced when the Glasgow Extention opened in 2008.

The Glasgow Extention is now under Construction. This will allow easier access to the M8. At the monment traffic has to use the M73 to get to the M8.

So this is the end of the A74 Story. The A74 is dead. The fate of the A74(M) is to be renumbered to M6 up to J13. The M74 junction Numbers have been renumbered to a new sequence as the Glasgow Extension is now finished. 350 miles of Motorway from Leicestershire to Glasgow.

M74, Blackwood

This is one of the earliest sections of M74, taken from the bridge taking the B7078 (former A74) over it. Behind the trees to the right is the original alignment of the A74, now a stub which is truncated just to the right of the red lorry. It would've crossed the site of the motorway here and re-emerges near those cars on the left.
