Mound Bridge has flaps prevent tidal flow in to the upper part of Loch Fleet.

Simple concrete arch over a deep gorge. The road curves over the bridge, so the outer part of the arch is convex

The new bridge is immediately downstream from the old, and climbs steeply to the north to cross the railway line - the old road zig-zagged to gain height.

This pre-stressed concrete bridge replaced the old suspension bridge. The latter was opened in 1835 and closed to traffic in 1959.
