M4 January 1972 - Coppermine - 19713.jpg
M4 January 1972

The English M4 was completed last month (Dec.) and the impact is widespread. Just as the M6 transformed the Lake District and Kendal, in 1970, so the M4 effect is felt from Maidenhead to Newport and many towns inbetween. Another classic road, the A4, is reduced from a major trunk route to a semi-rural byway.

Until finding this, I had thought the 1961 opening was all of the Staines bypass. In fact, it was only the busier A30 section.

The opening of the A40(M) Westway in 1970 was a turning point in the public's perception of road construction. This piece looks at the effect on residents living near the M4, M6, M1 and, an as yet unfinished M3.

End of an era. The long running saga of the A38/M5 finally comes to an end. The last section of M5, from J30-31 opens on Friday May 27, only just in time for that weekends Bank Holiday. The Exeter bypass becomes part of road history. The other delays last year, were due to the J26-27 section not opening until Oct 76, resulting in Wellington to Tiverton being the last rural bit of A38, -the 'longest lane'- to see heavy summer traffic.

The M5 finally makes it down to Exeter, at least as far as J30, then via the new link to the bypass. So, half of the famous bypass is relieved. It will be 18 months before the second half is. Also not open yet is Bridgwater to Taunton J24-25 and, Wellington to Tiverton, J26-27. Priority went to bypassing all the major towns first. The 'longest lane', is now reduced to 2 rural sections each side of Taunton.

Other parts of the country may have seen major advances in the motorway network over the last 2 years but, in the West Country, it is still business as usual. However, the M5 is marching south and, reached Bristol on Dec 3 1971. Gradually, the locals are waking up to the changes this road will bring in its wake.

M5, April 1973

M5 progress suffers a major setback at Avonmouth bridge, because of the box girder scare 2 years ago. J19-J20, Clevedon had opened in 1970, no use to A38 users, as it ended miles from any A road. J20-22 has just opened in January 73 but, that is where the A38 joins it from Bristol. How was the traffic signed during this interim period, A369 to J19, A370 to J21 or, A38 to J22, where the M5 ended ?

A minor rewrite of history here. This it seems, was the original Spaghetti Junction, not Gravelly. The national media didn't pick it up though, so Gravelly bagged the name instead, 18 months later. Still, it ties in nicely with the next big event in the calender....

A day in the life of the mostly S3 A38. Holidaymakers must have arrived more stressed than when they were at work. All this and the 'fun' of Haldon Hill too. It's no wonder many slept in laybys, as in the 1962 report.

The C Ring is on its way. The A20 seems to be earmarked as the future route to the Channel Tunnel, which also seems imminent. Banbury never got a seperate bypass as such. I wonder where it was meant to go, if not along the M40 line.
