MA50 and Tamlite Tampark - Coppermine - 20217.JPG
MA50 and Tamlite Tampark

A contrasting shot here. The MA50 is on the A2990 (the old single carriageay Thanet Way) while the Tamlite Tampark is in the Homebase car park. Both lanterns are around the same age - I think they were both installed when the Homebase was built around 1997. I remember that the MA50 replaced one of the pictured Z9554s because a new mini roundabout was constructed, which prompted the replacement of two lighting columns. There's another MA50 exactly the same just opposite this one which proves it!

MA50 and Z9554 on hockeysticks - Coppermine - 23724.jpg
MA50 and Z9554 on hockeysticks

Installed on what look like hockeystick columns from the 80s are a Z9554 and an MA50, the latter of which I presume is a casual replacement for another Z9554. I have pictured these lanterns previously, albeit from a little further away on the Eastern Avenue, marked out by the Trafficvisions in the background!

Geared MA50 on White Hart Lane - Coppermine - 23723.jpg
Geared MA50 on White Hart Lane

At the end of White Hart Lane before it morphs into Mawney Road is this single geared MA50 on a newer column. This must've been an early casual replacement for one of the Fabrikats, one of which is seen in the background, although why an integral geared MA50 wasn't used to match the rest of the lanterns is beyond me! Still, with an MA being used, who's complaining?

1980s geared MA50 on Mawney Road - Coppermine - 23722.jpg
1980s geared MA50 on Mawney Road

You've seen the Z9554s on those grand old Fabrikat columns with cranked brackets on the Romford side of Mawney Road, now it's time to explore the Collier Row end of the road! This one picture pretty much sums it up - the road is lit with 1980s geared MA50s with hardly any casual replacements at all! I did spot a single Arc, but nothing more! Although there is one surprise...

1980s geared MA50 on Mawney Road

The Collier Row end of Mawney Road is lit almost entirely by these 1980s geared MA50s on what I presume are Fabrikat columns, but with right-angled brackets as opposed to the cranked ones seen with the Z9554s on the Romford side.

MA50s and Fabrikats on Collier Row Road - Coppermine - 23717.jpg
MA50s and Fabrikats on Collier Row Road

Collier Row Road is lit mostly by these MA50s on Fabrikat columns with short brackets, although they are interspersed with SGS203 and Iridium casual replacements, which I believe were retrofitted at the same time as some island crossings were installed at intervals along the road.

White Hart Lane is lit mostly by these MA50s installed on what look like short-bracketed Fabrikat columns. The lighting does change halfway along, but these installations do return afterwards.

MA50 on a possible 1960s column - Coppermine - 23060.JPG
MA50 on a possible 1960s column

A short section of the A127 just outside Hornchurch is lit by MA50s on what look possibly like 1960s columns. I remember seeing some Z9554s and Alpha 4s also installed on these back in the 90s, but they were all replaced with MA50s probably in the early-mid 2000s. Sadly, some of these installations have been replaced in the replacement scheme from Gallows Corner with Iridiums, but only up to a point.

MA50 on upangled sleeve bracket - Coppermine - 22628.jpg
MA50 on upangled sleeve bracket

After the stretch of unsleeved CU Arc 2Ds, these sleeved concretes installed with either MA50 or MA60 lanterns hone into view. These are brilliant installations, despite them being sleeved, as the sleeved brackets are upangled, given them a bit of a twist to the usual bog standard sleeve bracket.

A similar hockeystick to the previous photo can be found a little further along, this time with an MA50 installed. Again, this probably replaced a concrete column.

Another new MA50 on Romford Ring Road

Another new MA50 casual replacement used on the Romford Ring Road, used on the same type of column as shown previously, but shown from a better angle. It would have been really good practice if Havering had installed another one of those columns with the diagonal bracket arms, but with an MA60 being used, who's complaining?

New MA50 on Romford Ring Road

Well, well, well...what do I see here? It looks like a fairly recently installed MA50! This would've replaced one of those long bracket installations, one of which I've pictured here from a better angle. Just a shame that Havering didn't use a similar sort of column as a replacement!

Double-bracket geared MA50s on A13

Apologies for the blurry shot, but the third double-bracket column has two shoed MA50s installed. This is also the only installation of the lot with completely identical lanterns on it - the others have undergone a bit of pick-n-mix!

MAs and SGS203s at the end of Main Road

The view looking the other way on the flyover shows some more SGS203s and a couple of MA90s/50s (you can just see the second MA in front of the tall tree behind the first one) on 1970s Fabrikat columns on Main Road.

MA50s on Rom Valley Way

Rom Valley Way is lit entirely with MA50s (with no casual replacements, apart from a couple of new columns with ad boards attached, also installed with MA50s). Most installations look like this, but there are a couple with straight, perpendicular brackets, which I presume are later installations.

An MA50 being replaced by an Arc - Coppermine - 22557.jpg
An MA50 being replaced by an Arc

There's a small replacement scheme taking place on North Street at its junction with the Eastern Avenue, where two MAs and 3 or 4 black flat-glass ZX3s are being replaced with what look like WRTL Arcs with white canopies. I assume that the leaning of this column is part of the reason for replacement, as well as the condition of a few other installations near the junction after what look like collisions. So Havering council have probably got worried and decided to replace with sturdier installations.

Here's another MA50 and a Z9554 in the background on the A2990. Here, an effective comparison of the installations can be made. Obviously, the MA50 is much longer than the Z9554, but both lanterns look great on these installations!

Some of the Z9554s around the Snakes Lane junction have been replaced with MA50s, but that's alright considering they've been retrofitted to the old columns. The MA looks great on these installations, as it does any installation, anyway!

Philips MA50 at Snakes Lane junction

Where Broadmead Road meets Snakes Lane, MA50s installed on newer-looking columns light the junction. Snakes Lane, in the meantime, is lit with SGS203s (a couple of which can be seen in the background) along most of its length, but I think it does switch to GR150s and MAs as it approaches Chigwell Road.

Philips MA50 on Broadmead Road - Coppermine - 20362.jpg
Philips MA50 on Broadmead Road

Thinking about it, I think this may actually be a gear-in-lantern MA50 as compared to an MA60. However, it's installed on one of the 1970s columns on Broadmead Road, and would have definitely replaced a Z9554. Having said that, however, it looks brilliant on this type of column, and is a perfect replacement for the Z9554! The same goes for the Alpha 4!

UPDATE 2010: Some of these columns have now been casually replaced by post-top Urbis Furyos. Maybe the council just wanted to replace the columns in worst condition rather than completely replace them?

An oddball installation here! An MA50 has been used on the shorter height columns - probably a retrofit for an MA90 at one point.

Here's a view of one of the MA50 casual replacements for those GEC Z9554s on Chigwell Road. This also looks great on the 1970s columns, and is just as pleasant and welcomable as the Z9554s!

Gear-in-base MA50 - Coppermine - 18597.jpg
Gear-in-base MA50

Again, pretty boring here! I suppose the only interesting feature in the picture is the 30mph speed detector, and that only flashes if someone speeds past it! The lantern, by the way, looks to be more like a gear-in-base MA50 rather than a gear-in-head MA90! Thanks Sotonsteve!

Gear-in-base Philips MA50 with shoe - Coppermine - 18596.jpg
Gear-in-base Philips MA50 with shoe

The same lantern as the previous photo, except that this is the earlier version with a small shoe. According to Sotonsteve, the later spigot-entry type in the previous photo started being used in the early 1980s! I think, therefore, that this lantern might have been the original installation to this column! This means that the lantern pictured previously could well be a casual replacement for one of these!

Philips MA50 (gear-in-base)

I didn't even realise when I first visited Birchington that this installation was here - it seems to be shrouded in the tree behind it for most of the year! But today, it is clearly visible! This lights the junction between Park Lane and Canterbury Road, just down the side of All Saints Church.

Philips MA50 (gear-in-head) on an S&L column

This is the only surviving S&L column on this stretch of Canterbury Road in Birchington. I took this shot more for the column than the lantern, but the MA50 looks rather nice on S&L columns, so I thought I might as well shoot the whole installation. There were others at some point - I can remember three others, with an Alpha 3, SGS203 and Alpha 1 installed respectively, but they were replaced by various lanterns over the years, such as WRTL Arcs, CU Phosco P678s and WRTL MRL6s.

MA50 on Main Road

Main Road, leading from Gallows Corner into Romford town centre, is lit by MA50s on some possible Fabrikat columns. These installations are very common in Islington, installed with MA90s and ZX3s, in North London and such installations with white ZX3s light London Road, which isn't too far from here. Great to see these columns still standing, as I think they're quite old!

MA50 on steel column with large bracket

Rainham Road coming into the borough of Havering from the borough of Barking and Dagenham is lit with these MA50s on steel columns with large brackets. These probably date back to the early 90s as I've always remembered them here and looked quite new in the mid-90s when I first came down this neck of the woods.

This is one of those late 70s/early 80s installations on the A2990. Originally a Z9554 would've been installed on here and the MA50 probably came along some time during the 90s. It still really compliments this installation though!

Unfortunately, there aren't many of these left at all on Westwood Road now - most have been casually replaced over the years by P678s and Arcs, and many around Asda have been either retrofitted with P678s or Arcs, or, very recently, replaced with Iridiums on new Stainton columns. A few are still clinging on here and there though, like this fantastic example about halfway down Westwood Road.

The one-way College Road gyratory system is lit with MA50s on standard steel columns. Not particularly exciting, I know, but roads lit with SOX in such a large amount is almost extinct on the Thanet now. Unfortunately, this example is dayburning, meaning that a new Arc may be on its way soon!

Z9554 and MA50 on double bracket column - Coppermine - 20382.jpg
Z9554 and MA50 on double bracket column

Just before the Snakes Lane junction there are a couple of double-bracket columns - one with two Z9554s and the other with a Z9554 and gear-in-lantern MA50. I took a picture of the latter, as my instinct told me to picture these installations all too late! However, this is still pleasant enough to be appreciated. There is bad news however - the double-bracket black ZX3s you see in the background replaced MA50s, and must have done so fairly recently as they look fairly new.

UPDATE 2011: These have both been replaced by black flat-glass ZX3s.

GR150, MA50 and Z9554M on Jenkins Lane

Here's a better, zoomed in version of the surviving GR150, MA50 and Z9554M on Jenkins Lane. The MA50 is obstructed by the Give Way sign, but you can still just make it out. The geared MA60 on the octagonal steel column is out of shot to the right - it's still there, don't worry! Looking at the GR150, its column looks like it's leaning slightly - I just hope that won't mean replacement!

UPDATE: Unfortunately, replacement is what has happened! All three of these installations have now been replaced with Arcs.
