Long-bracketed MA60 - Coppermine - 22612.jpg
Long-bracketed MA60

Apologies for the repetition here, but this is the only stretch of SOX left on this stretch of road now, so I'm making the most of it while I'm here!

Geared MA60 on A12 - Coppermine - 22094.jpg
Geared MA60 on A12

This is now sadly the only stretch of MA60s left on the A12 Eastern Avenue before Gallows Corner. However, the MA60s here don't look as if they will be replaced any time soon as there are no replacement columns anywhere. I'm not sure how long they will last though, as the flyover ahead is having work done to it, and the MA60s on the A127 at the other side have all been replaced by I-ruddy-ridiums!

Gear-in-shoe MA60 on a Fabrikat column - Coppermine - 23058.JPG
Gear-in-shoe MA60 on a Fabrikat column

Gallows Corner still has a few MA60s installed on Fabrikat columns which originally held GEC Bricks, although others on the other side of the flyover were replaced this year or last with Iridiums - the majority of the MA60s on the A127 were rather tired and possibly dated from the 70s, so I suppose the replacement was necessary.

Dayburning Z9554 and MA60 on sleeved concretes on A1306 - Coppermine - 20986.JPG
Dayburning Z9554 and MA60 on sleeved concretes on A1306

On this section of the A1306, a variety of SOX lanterns can be seen. In the foreground, we have a dayburning Z9554 installed on a sleeved Stanton. The next column along is another identical concrete, but with an MA60 (likely to have replaced another Z9554) installed. Meanwhile, in the background, more Z9554s and MA50/60s can be seen installed on a variety of tubular steel columns. Notice how the Z9554 in the background is installed at a lower height than the surrounding MAs! How weird!

Looking off Gallows Corner at Straight Road

I'm unsure exactly what installations light Straight Road, but the approach from it to Gallows Corner is lit by a couple of 1970s MA60s (pictured previously) with shoes and SGS203s on the roundabout.

Urbis ZX3 Zebra and MA60 - Coppermine - 22558.jpg
Urbis ZX3 Zebra and MA60

The A12 beyond Gallows Corner is lit by 70s/80s gear-in-shoe MA60s. They are still standing as of May 2009, so they have done incredibly well so far! The puffin crossing in the foreground must be a recent addition, as it wasn't here when I last passed here about 8 years ago! This has meant that a ZX3 Zebra has been installed to light it - thankfully however surrounding MA60s haven't been replaced with SON lanterns, as has been seen on some council roads, which is always good!

A recent MA60 casual replacement - Coppermine - 22095.jpg
A recent MA60 casual replacement

What looks to be a recent casual replacement. It would've been nice if the lantern was the gear-in-shoe version of the MA60 and it was installed on an octagonal steel column to match the rest of the installations, but, hey, it's an MA...who's complaining?

MA60s on entrance ramp to Moto Services from Kent-bound M2

Here's a close up of the MA60s shown in the previous image. Note just how brown their canopies have gone! Sadly, I don't think they work anymore, but are still standing anyway!

Lighting on the entrance ramp to the Moto Services from the Kent-bound M2 - Coppermine - 21704.JPG
Lighting on the entrance ramp to the Moto Services from the Kent-bound M2

The Moto (formerly Granada) services on the Kent-bound M2 between junctions 4 and 5 has a number of interesting lighting installations in its car park. First up, the entrance ramp leading up from the Faversham-bound M2 has three MA60s (one single bracket, two double) which probably date back to the 70s/80s judging by how brown their canopies are, and also another double-bracket installation with two MK III Alpha 8s on it, which also looks fairly old judging by the colour of the lanterns and the column rust.

UPDATE MARCH 2010: Both these installations have now been replaced with unknown SON lanterns. Oddly the single MA60 at the beginning of the slip road hasn't been replaced.

New Philips MA60 on M25 - Coppermine - 20999.JPG
New Philips MA60 on M25

Well, well, well, would you believe it! A 2008 MA60 casual replacement installed on one of Britain's busiest motorways! This replaced one of the 1980s installations with geared MA50s in the background after the column was crashed into, and it looks smashing! The only thing that's weird about it is that the column is taller than all the surrounding columns, but with an MA installed, who's complaining?

Double-bracket MA60s on A13 - Coppermine - 20985.JPG
Double-bracket MA60s on A13

For some reason, this section of the A13 was not upgraded to Iridiums in the road upgrade in 2004, but I'm not complaining! There are three Y-shaped double-bracket installations surviving here, the first of which has two MA60s of different variations installed. The London-bound carriageway bears a geared MA60 while the Essex-bound carriageway is lit with an integral geared MA60. I think the integral geared MA60 was only installed a few months ago, as a casual replacement for another shoed MA60.

UPDATE: The GR150 and Alpha 4 you see in the background have now been retrofitted with SGS203s. The column, however, still very much survives!

Philips MA60 on Redbridge Roundabout

Here's another gear-in-shoe MA60 on Redbridge Roundabout, but installed on a longer bracket. It is these exact installations that were installed along the Eastern Avenue in Romford, where the Seleniums and Trafficvisions now stand. In the background, you can see a double-bracket installation with integral geared MA50s on it, at the end of the SGS203-lit Redbridge Lane West.

Philips MA60 on long bracket on Broadmead Road

Here's another long-bracket installation on Broadmead Road, but this time with a gear-in-lantern MA50 installed! This looks just as spectacular as the Z9554s and really suits this type of column!

Philips MA60 on Roding Lane South - Coppermine - 20369.jpg
Philips MA60 on Roding Lane South

Here, either a gear-in-lantern MA50 or remote-geared MA60 has been used as a replacement for a GR100 at some point. Usually I say MAs look great as casual replacements (and they certainly do!), but I think this looks a little too big for the column - I think the smaller MA50s used are a lot more proportionate to these columns and thus work better!

Philips MA60 at Brenley Corner - Coppermine - 19770.jpg
Philips MA60 at Brenley Corner

The SON-lit Brenley Corner actually has MA60s lighting the on and off-slip on and off the A299 - the on and off-slip on and off the M2 just a few hundred yards in the opposite direction to this photo is lit by SGS203s! The roundabout did have some GEC Bricks, but they have now all been replaced over the years by Thorn Pilotes, Iridiums, Arcs and SGS203s! What a muddle!

Casual replacement MA60 - Coppermine - 22553.jpg
Casual replacement MA60

This is what most casual replacements for the gear-in-shoe MA60s look like - gear-in-lantern MA60s mounted on plain steel columns. Not as exciting as the gear-in-shoe MA60 installations, but it's still great to see SOX still being installed as casual replacements.

Double-bracket MA60s at junction of A12 and Straight Road

The end of Straight Road as it meets Gallows Corner Roundabout is lit with a double-bracket version of the 80s gear-in-shoe MA60s. The SGS203 in the foreground lights the roundabout.

Shorter bracket version with 80s gear-in-shoe MA60 - Coppermine - 22100.jpg
Shorter bracket version with 80s gear-in-shoe MA60

These installations with the 80s gear-in-shoe MA60s also come in short bracket forms. I doubt if these are casual replacements, however, as exactly the same lanterns have been used and are in exactly the same condition. Note the ZX3 Zebra weirdly lighting the pelican crossing instead of a zebra crossing in the foreground!

Older MA60s on the A12 past Gallows Corner - Coppermine - 22099.jpg
Older MA60s on the A12 past Gallows Corner

After going round the roundabout underneath Gallows Corner Flyover (lit by black flat-glass ZX3s, if you're wondering), the A12 becomes just a two lane dual carriageway and is still lit by MA60s, but these look to be older (possibly dating back to the 80s) than the other installations due to the small shoe and slightly grubby look of the lanterns.

Shorter bracket version with a gear-in-shoe MA60 - Coppermine - 22098.jpg
Shorter bracket version with a gear-in-shoe MA60

This is the shorter bracket version of the installations. The MA60 here is probably the original installation in that case, as this could be a casual replacement for the longer bracket versions.

Gear-in-shoe MA60 on the A12 - Coppermine - 22097.jpg
Gear-in-shoe MA60 on the A12

This is the longer bracket version of the installation shown previously. I presume that the long bracket versions are the original installations that look to have had Z9564s originally installed on them, whilst the short bracket ones are probably casual replacements, in which case the MA60s are probably the original lanterns.

Gear-in-shoe MA60 on possible Fabrikat columns - Coppermine - 22102.jpg
Gear-in-shoe MA60 on possible Fabrikat columns

The off-slip from the A12 onto Gallows Corner Roundabout is lit with gear-in-shoe MA60s which look to be mounted on possible Fabrikat columns. These columns used to have GEC Bricks mounted on them, but since last time I came here around a year ago, all but one have been replaced by MA60s and some more on the other side of the flyover have been replaced by Iridiums as part of the flyover works! Unfortunately, the lone GEC Brick is rather shrouded in the trees, so couldn't get a decent picture of it!

Geared MA60s on A12 off-slip at Gallows Corner

At Gallows Corner, the A12 diverges from the mainline carriageway, down a slip-road, around a roundabout and continues towards Brentwood. Both slip roads are lit by these geared MA60s mounted upon what look like short-bracketed S&L columns. These used have GEC Bricks mounted upon them, but the MAs stepped in as replacements some time in the early 2000s.

MA60s on A1306 at Lakeside

The A1306, known at this point as the Lakeside Arterial Road, is lit mostly by these double-bracket MA60s, which are original to the road's construction in the early 90s. If you look carefully, in the roundabout in the background, you can also some SGS203s mounted on various columns.

The Hyperion's are original to when this road was built, around the early 80's. The MA60's in the distance are casual replacements. The whole lot is being swept away by Vectra's on new tubular columns.

Philips MA60s on M25 near Dartford Tunnel

A very large part of the M25 through Essex is actually still SOX-lit! These gear-in-shoe MA60s light the M25 all the way up to J28 with the A12, where Urbis ZX3s and Philips Iridiums installed in a resurfacing scheme in 2004 take over up to J25, before the MA60s return again near the border of Hertfordshire.

Geared MA60 on A12

The A12 between the junction with Pettits Lane North and Gallows Corner is now the only stretch of the road with MA60s, the other stretches having had their MA60s replaced throughout 2006, 2007 and 2008 with Seleniums, Trafficvisions and Iridiums - notice, however, how Philips are still reigning supreme on the A12. Replacement of this stretch unfortunately looks imminent too, as Gallows Corner is having major works done to it, which has already seen some MA60s on the A127 replaced with I-ruddy-ridiums!

MA60s on Waterloo Road - Coppermine - 19711.jpg
MA60s on Waterloo Road

Waterloo Road, part of the Romford Ring Road, is lit by these ever fantastic MA60s installed on yet more classic installations! This time, they're giant hockeysticks that look a bit like octagonal steel columns, but I think these are of Fabrikat rather than Stainton manufacture! There are also plenty of recent casual replacements in the form of more MA60s, which is always good to see!
