Queue at Ray Hall - Coppermine - 5951.jpg
Queue at Ray Hall

This is something you don't see often - queuing on the M6 South slip road. It has obviously caught out the drivers of the white van and the silver estate who are taking evasive action by driving over the chevrons to avoid the queue. In the couple of minutes I was taking photos about a dozen vehicles, including a lorry, did the same thing and some drove straight into lane 1 at little more than walking pace forcing traffic behind to brake like the red Laguna at the bottom of the picture.

Ray Hall Interchange in the 1980s - Coppermine - 4557.JPG
Ray Hall Interchange in the 1980s - notice the Midlands lights, and the presence of a 'classic' taper - no chevrons, just a diagonal hatch. Also note the rather questionable merge on the right - this was clearly a predecessor to a proper tiger tail! Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 20, 2006 by Bryn666

More M6 was opened and, a speed limit was proposed.

1962 plan for M6 junction 7 and the eastern part of junction 8. The possibility of weaving issues between the two junctions was recognised before the motorway was built and various designs were made for the junctions to try to overcome the problem. The eastbound J7 exit slip has been lengthened and leaves before the M5 joins. Junction 7 is a regular roundabout with all the slip roads joining the outside of the roundabout. This brings the westbound entry slip closer to the M5 exit than the design that was built and it is this which may have been a factor in the rejection of this layout.

The start or end well the top bit of the M5

Approaching the end of the M5 or start of it at the M6. This does seem strange. We are heading north, to go South we go left which is North and right South to go North. Yeah i havent a clue what im on about - its still very quiet for Saturday

Coming off the M6 and heading on down the M5. This is a decent shot I happened to get of the M6 above while going down the M5 sliproad. As for the street lighting, the M6 is lit with Philips SGS204s on short double-brackets, and the M5 is lit with Urbis ZX3s on long single-brackets.

Heading South towards the M5

Clear signposting encourages drivers to get in lane, according to which motorway they intend to follow. Those on the left will sadly be forced to leave the M6.
