Reigate Tunnel south portal (was A217)

Reigate Tunnel deserves to have much greater prominence within SABRE than it seems to have, being of great historic importance the earliest road tunnel built in Britain (and possibly Europe). It was built in 1823 by W Constable to avoid a detour round the Castle Mound in Reigate. It is around 50m long, bored through sandstone, and was used by vehicular traffic as recently as the 1970s, as part of the A217. Traffic in Reigate now goes round a one way system, of which Castle Mound forms the centre.

This is the first wooden one I've ever come across. The credentials are dubious as not standard design or font, plus the vinyl appears to be newer than the background. But I think it unlikely to be from any other source and lasted so long, although the numbers may have been replaced since being made originally.

The A242 is a short road running for approximately 2 miles between the A23 north of Redhill to the A25 just east of Reigate town centre.

The first building on the right forms part of the Red Cross Inn (see TQ2550 : The Red Cross Inn). The remaining buildings were built around 1900, to replace some earlier which had partly collapsed in 1860 into a system of caves that riddle this area (for example see TQ2550 : Entrance to The Barons' Cave). To ensure that they were sound, they were built on girders. In the 1970s/80s one of the premises was occupied by a wine bar called 'On the Rocks', with a seating area in one of the caves below.

In 1987, London Road was closed while work proceeded to stabilise part of the cave system by filling them with sand and concrete.

Tunnel Road in Reigate - opened in 1824 - is considered to be the oldest surviving road tunnel serving a public road in the British Isles. It was closed to heavy traffic from the 1970's due to concern over the damage being caused by vibration from heavy vehicles.
