Revo Prefect with inline photocell

This combination of lantern/photocell/column used to be common throughout Dudley but they are becoming increasingly difficult to find as the council undertakes a major lighting renewal programme.

This is on an adjacent street. These were also sleeved with Beta 5's.

The columns in the distance were sleeved in the late 80's when 90% of Sandwell's mercury bit the dust. The remainder went in the mid 90's and this was one of them.

This was one of a handful of streets in West Bromwich still to retain it's mercury lighting. The columns were sleeved within a year of this picture being taken and fitted with Beta 5's.

UPDATE: Revo Prefect is being replaced!

UPDATE Oct 2008: A WRTL Arc was fitted to this column a few months ago, but the Prefect is still standing as of last week!

Another View of the Revo Prefect

Just for Rojojnr. Here's another picture of the Revo Prefect in Essex Gardens basking in the evening sunlight last week. This wonderful installation is very a short walk from my front door!

I've lived down here for about 8 years and I'm pretty sure this is a unique survivor in Thanet.

Pair of Revo Prefects - Coppermine - 6813.jpg
Pair of Revo Prefects?

The lantern in the distance with the inline photocell is a Revo Prefect. The one on the swanneck is a bell top version. Notice how the bottom of the swanneck has been taped to contain the spalling.

Just two mercury lights remain in this street whilst the rest have been sleeved with SON.

Revo Prefect with photocell

Here's a Revo Prefect with an inline photocell which I have only ever seen used in Dudley, it is sitting on a CU column. In the distance is a swan neck with a GEC Z5590 sitting on it. The bottom of the swan neck has started to spall.

On the left is an all too common sight in the Black Country these days - a local pub which is derelict. Chances are it will be demolished and a housing developer will build a load of dog boxes on it.

Here's another Revo Prefect on a CU column. There is a long crack running down most of the length of the column.

Revo Prefect on an unusual concrete column

Sorry about that, I've just been told that the lantern is not a Thorn Beta 4, but a Revo Prefect! Thanks very much for correcting me, Sotonsteve! This must be one of the only examples of its kind, not only on the Thanet but in the rest of the UK also! This is the second column down on the left-hand side of Essex Gardens, off Canterbury Road. Sadly, the lantern is now facing replacement - a Stainton hockeystick without a lantern has gone up next to it over the past week! The new lantern will probably be an SGS101 or Arc! Very sad indeed, as this is the only installation of its kind in the local area!
