Holborn Circus - Close Up - Coppermine - 2757.jpg
Holborn Circus - Close Up

This is a curious junction. It is a kind of roundabout, in that traffic has to pass the statue of Prince Albert in the middle as if it was a roundabout. Yet all approaches are signallised, and traffic turning right from Holborn into New Fetter Lane or St Andrews Street has to give way to oncoming traffic.

N6 Kinnegad - Tyrellspass sculpture

I took a shot of this on the day the road opened, before the work was quite finished. I wondered if the concrete supports might be something to do with an overbridge for the nearby peat bog railway system. Turns out I was wrong!

Naas Sphere - 'Perpetual Motion' by Jct 9 of the M7 - Geograph - 4638725.jpg
Naas Sphere - 'Perpetual Motion' by Jct 9 of the M7

The following is the Artists??? statement A hollow, ferro-cement sphere, approximately 9 metres in diameter. The colour and texture of the sphere would be similar to a road surface and the various road markings depicted would be painted with a similar substance to that of actual road markings. Due to the large scale and position of the site it is important that the sculpture is in keeping with, and not diminished by, the scale; that it works equally well from all angles and that it is most effective from some distance. The road arrows suggest the movement of air water currents over the surface of a globe and follow the main flow of traffic towards Dublin, across the bridge and particularly along the turn off for Naas. This emphasises the town???s geographical position in relation to the motorway.

As an element symbol of motion, a sphere of this size with road markings, would act as an impressive yet integrated celebration of travel and motorway design. It would appeal to a broad cross-section of road users and be a light hearted and distinctive landmark.
