Gallery:Speed limit sign/40 mph
The A61 Station Road as it runs past Thirsk Racecourse. The station is situated a long way from Thirsk, leaving the town the other side of the racecourse.
A London Cycle Network signpost on route 85 is located at the northern end of Wyborne Way, alongside the North Circular Road.
The Trans-Pennie A66 has to go though this villiage. They have wanted thier by-pass for the last 30 years. With all the Gyusm traffic from Kirkby Thore (Some is taken by rail on the S&C line) & freight with their loud trucks doing 40 mph, no wonder they want one. The work to start the by-pass will start very soon.

Here Partridge Green Road, Shermanbury becomes Shermanbury Road, Partridge Green at the entrance to Shermanbury Grange, though the latter is officially in West Grinstead parish. The road was already in existence during the 17th century and is the modern day B2116.
Narrow hard shoulder due to reduced land take; the road goes through a nature reserve. The 40 mph limit is due to road works. Normal dual carriageway speed limit in Ireland is 60 mph (100 km/h from Sept 2004).

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 28, 2009 by DavidNW9The large sign refers to the side-road, while the 40 is a repeater sign on the main B3165 at Marshwood (SY375995). The problem here is that it is a rather acute junction and the two roads face more-or-less the same direction.
On the other side, of course, both say 40.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 12, 2009 by DavidNW9The notice attached to the post of the right hand sign states an intention by the council to reduce all urban 40mph limits in Aylesbury to 30. The following year the speed limit reductions were carried out. This is on the A41 London Road in 2006 before the posts were simply cut off leaving just the bases sticking out the ground.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 10, 2007 by FreddyTheFrogThe A338 (in the background) is exempt from the blanket 40 limit on New Forest roads. However, this section of the A338 happens to be a 40 limit anyway, so we are left with this sign, showing the end of the 40mph zone but with a 40 limit commencing.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 30, 2006 by exploSign at the south end of the causeway leading to Mersea Island in Essex. There is a blanket 40 mph speed limit on rural roads on the island, properly marked with repeaters, despite the fact that speeds significantly above 40 are rarely achievable anyway, and enforcement is likely to be minimal
