Enlightened Swindon. Bagged up Gatso on the A420 between Shrivenham & the A419. One on the other side as well, behind me.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 05, 2005 by M4SimonWilliam Street runs north-east towards the centre of Swindon. It is typical of the many substantial Victorian terraces to be found in this part of the town.
The road used to cross the GWR on a level crossing but hasn't done so for very many years. The buildings on the right are part of the designer outlet. Dreadful I know but it means that a part of the complex has been retained.
I believe the term for these signs is 'pre-Worboys'. The sign is in quite good condition and hasn't had its road number indicator removed as others have elsewhere. This is perhaps an oversight as the main road, Kingshill Road visible behind the sign, is now the A4289. There is a closer look at the sign here Link
This foreshortened view shows the recently-completed flyover on the A419 just outside Swindon. The image was taken on 3rd February 2007. The flyover is expected to be open two days later.
Queen Victoria House is an undistinguished looking modern office & shops block, built a few years ago at this busy road junction in Old Town. It also has a frontage to Albert Street, and is seen here from Bath Road. There is an interesting array of communications equipment on the building's roof.
The imposing building on the right behind the advertising board was once, I believe, occupied by a prominent veterinary surgeon. Then it became the offices of a car dealership. The dealership vacated the site some years ago and re-located. Since then the building has been left unoccupied.
Marlborough Road was and remains one of the main routes to and from the town. However its character here has changed over the last ten to fifteen years. At the left is fairly new housing, Mill Court. Beyond that the building with the mansard roof is Ashlar Court. Both developments cater, I think, mainly for retired people. Before this development occurred there was a large car dealership here called Greens who held the Chrysler franchise for a while. The cottages on the right are relatively old, early 19th century. They are within the Old Town conservation area and are listed Link

Five mini-roundabouts arranged in a circle, meaning that the larger roundabout is two-way and the chevrons point anticlockwise.

Quite a gentle gradient.

A view of this difficult junction, from the opposite direction to this:- SU1682 : Marlborough Road - junction with Windsor Road. Today there is a mini-roundabout here. A traffic feature that Swindon is very addicted to, often when you least expect it. The van waiting to turn out of Windsor Road belonged to the well-known Empire Stores.
Marlborough Road is one of the main routes out of Swindon, as it connects the area known as Old Town to the route to the M4 motorway. The road on the right, Windsor Road, is the busy main road through the Lawn residential estate and comes out on the dual carriageway road, Queen's Drive. Right turns from Windsor Road into Marlborough Road were always difficult, but since this picture was taken in 1983, a mini-roundabout has been installed here. Note the Mini coming along Marlborough Road; a very popular car at the time.
