Tollbar End fantasy layout.jpg
My attempt at improving Tollbar End. The sliproads to and from the A45 east of here have only been included for completeness. There's more than enough space to the east of here for a new junction with the dual carriageway. I've given the A45 priority to reduce the amount of weaving between here and Stivichall. The slips on the A46 northbound but without the one to the A45 they would be better than the average LILO.

A45-A46 Tollbar End Improvement - Coppermine - 10029.jpg
A45-A46 Tollbar End Improvement

Based on the HA proposal I present this much improved version with more freeflow. The link road to the airport is part of the HA scheme but whereas the HA version has an at-grade traffic light junction with the A45, my version has it above the A45 with a slip road for A45(E) and A423. At Tollbar End the HA scheme has either an A45 or A46 underpass but mine has A46 and A45(W) underpasses. Also proposed by HA but later dropped for environmental reasons was direct A46 links at Stivichall (the GSJ to the west).

Tollbar End roadworks showing A46.JPG
The A46 just next to Tollbar End (on the side stretching north towards the M6), during the roadworks to add an underpass. The underpass is currently being constructed (centre of the picture). Tollbar End itself is just out of view to the right. The photograph was taken from an unclassified road overlooking the roundabout itself.
Tollbar End A46 underpass under construction.jpg
The construction works on the underpass carrying the A46 under Tollbar End. The A46 traffic is currently being directed along what will eventually become sliproads (northbound seen at the bottom of the picture right to left, southbound at the top of the picture running left to right). Tollbar End itself is barely to the right of the picture, and its exit to the A45 eastbound is visible in the distance (the green sign visible in the top-right is serving the purpose of a flag sign and showing the location of the exit, but is shaped like an ADS or a motorway exit sign for some reason).
Tollbar End improvement works (north side).jpg
Tollbar End during the improvement works to add an underpass. This picture was taken from a nearby unclassified road (shown at the bottom-right of the picture), and shows the exits to the B4110 (at the right of the picture), the A45 from/towards Birmingham (at the top of the picture), and the A46 (at the bottom-left). The roundabout itself is also visible (but a relatively small part of the picture), and is in the top left (where the black and white chevron sign is). At this stage in the improvements, the A45 westbound approaching the junction had been given a new alignment in which going straight on goes directly onto the A46 (which is clearly visible), and turning right to some extent is needed to go onto the roundabout (making this a TOTSO arrangement; from this angle, the roundabout looks almost like a crossroads). The main moving flow of traffic at the instant the photo was taken was from the roundabout onto the A46 (because most other flows were stopped by traffic signals). The centre-right lane (with the car) is a filter lane from the B4110 onto the A46, with the white lorry on the path from the B4110 onto the roundabout itself.
Tollbar End improvement works (south side).jpg
The best view I could get of the south side of Tollbar End during the improvement works to add an underpass (photos taken from ground level hardly showed anything, so I took this photo from an unclassified road overlooking the junction). The exit to the A46 is shown at the bottom of the picture; the exit to the A45 eastbound is at the top-left (indicated by the green sign); and the exit to the unclassified road is shown in the distance. Most of the roundabout itself is also visible (at the time, the roundabout had not been dug out, and there was a footpath running along it).
Tollbar End improvement works (roundabout).jpg
The roundabout that makes up Tollbar End, during the improvement works to add an underpass beneath it. (Sorry about the tilted angle at which the picture was taken.) In the foreground is the exit to the A46 (which can be clearly seen from this angle to not connect directly to the roundabout; rather, there is effectively a crossroads between the A45 and A46 eastbound effectively forming a single one-way road, the B4110, and the roundabout, just out of view to the right). Taken from an unclassified road overlooking the roundabout.
Green cone on the B4110.jpg
A picture of the left-turn filter lane from the B4110 onto the A46 at Tollbar End during its improvement works. (Tollbar End itself is visible in the distance, and the main line of the B4110 is visible just beyond the concrete barrier). A green cone is in use to mark the works entrance.

The ADS for Tollbar End's old layout (just before the underpass was added), as seen from the B4110 southbound looking towards the junction.
