Gallery:Watling Street
Still along the old A5, well, the original before it was bypassed, and the bypassed again. Sitting at the crossroads between Loughton and Shenley, this sign still stands, helpfully pointing the direction the capital and helpfully, giving you the distance. The man in the picture who was working on the house was slightly bemused by me taking pictures...I was tempted to say 'Don't worry Sir, I am from SABRE...', but I didn't, missed opportunity there methinks!

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 12, 2005 by PaulRidley_CVTLooking South down Crick Lane on the alignment of Watling Street.I would suggest that the tree stumps would have been the original hedgerow. To the left of the fence is the M1 which obliterated Crick Lane.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 12, 2005 by PaulRidley_CVTThe new Watling Street is off to the left, the roman alignment follows the hedge on the right.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 12, 2005 by PaulRidley_CVTNow unclassified, this road was once part of B5406, and A5 and Watling Street before that.
Taken from underneath A442 Queensway. The first few yards of Watling Street leading away towards Canterbury from Richborough Roman fort: the first stretch of Roman road constructed in Britain, now little more than a cart track.
