Gallows Corner is an important junction for the A12, to the northeast of Romford. It is named after the gallows that were on this site.
History
The junction was where the two new Arterial Roads - the Eastern Avenue and the Southend Arterial Road - were to meet end-on at the A12. In the 1940s, the A12 number took Eastern Avenue, with the A118 number being used for the old A12. In the 1970s, the roundabout was enlarged and a temporary (lightweight construction, S2) flyover was added, running from the A12 to the A127 and providing one lane in each direction to bypass the roundabout. The flyover was temporary as the M12 Noak Hill Spur was proposed to end at this junction, providing access to the motorway bypass of Eastern Avenue from the A127 and bringing with it a wider and more permanent structure on a slightly different alignment. However the temporary flyover remains, like many in London, long past the end of its expected lifespan.
