Junctions related to the A817 | |||
This is the junction between the A82 and A817 on Loch Lomondside. The A817 is a new road, built by the MOD to provide access to the naval bases at Faslane and Coulport either side of Garelochhead. The A817 actually heads south from this junction (after crossing the Finlass Water), before turning west. However, due to the contours and gradient requirements, it would have been difficult to get the two routes to meet further south.
Whilst this junction is a fairly basic give-way T-Junction, it comprises a short section of D1 carriageway on the A82, providing a central refuge for turning traffic. The southbound carriageway appears to be the original, with the northbound moved to the west to provide the island. Whether it was originally opened as a short D2 section is not yet clear. The extra space afforded seems to have been in order to allow for large vehicles to turn into or out of the A817, with the roundabouts on the Garelochhead bypass also specially designed to allow for oversize vehicles.
