|Crossings related to the B7039|
The bridge across the Yarrow Water at Bowhill is a single span stone arch which carries the B7039 on its short journey to the Ettrick Valley. Little information on the bridge is available, so the reason behind its name is unclear, although presumably a General was at least partly responsible for its construction!
The bridge may have been built primarily as access to the Bowhill estate, now one of the homes of the Duke of Buccleuch, whose main entrance is immediately across the bridge from the main A708 road which crosses the pass from the Yarrow Water to the Moffat Water. Indeed, the only two properties in sight of the bridge are the East Lodge to Bowhill House and the West Lodge to Philiphaugh House!
