The Senator George Mitchell Peace Bridge crosses the Woodford River, north of Belturbet. The bridge opened on 1st April 1999 to replace the Aghalane Bridge, 210m to the east, which was blown up by paramilitaries in 1972.
It was dedicated in recognition of the American Senator George Mitchell's contribution in bringing about the Good Friday Agreement. The bridge was built with new approach roads to reinstate the N3 - A509 route between Cavan and Enniskillen (and ultimately from Dublin to south Donegal) that had been impassible for a quarter century. The European Union provided 75% of the funding for the project through its Peace and Reconciliation Programme, with the balance coming from the road authorities on either side.
