For Gilmerton Junction in Edinburgh, see Gilmerton Junction (Edinburgh).
The small village of Gilmerton lies on the A85 a few miles east of Crieff on the road to Perth. It is also where the short multiplex between the A85 and the A822 ends, with the A822 heading north over the hills to Amulree, where it turns east to Dunkeld, with the A826 continuing north to Aberfeldy. The junction is a simple give way T junction, albeit with a curve on the A85 as it passes through the junction.
In the past, however, the junction may have been elsewhere, as the road built by General Wade in the 1720s sits higher up the hill to the north west of the modern junction. There was presumably also some form of road linking Crieff and Perth at the time, and it seems unlikely that Wade would have built a parallel route, so presumably there was a link in Gilmerton, with an old track snaking down the hill immediately to the west being a possible route.
