Gilwern Junction is at the west end of the Gilwern Bypass on the Heads of the Valleys Road.

The junction shown in 1972

It opened when the Gilwern Bypass was constructed as part of Stage 1 of the Heads of the Valleys Road. This opened shortly after the Abergavenny Southern Bypass had opened in 1962.

The westwards section through the Clydach Gorge was expected to be opened in early summer of 1963 per the South Wales Gazette of 3 August 1962.
