Glan Conwy Interchange is junction 19 of the A55.
It is the point where two of the Welsh Way Tourist Routes cross (The North Wales Way and The Cambrian Way).
History
The original A55/A470/B5381 junction was to the south of the current interchange. A roundabout was built there at some date between 1959 and 1962, and today serves as the junction between the A470, A547 and B5381.
The present large roundabout to the north dates from 1985 when the section of A55 bypassing Mochdre (Llanddulas to Glan Conwy phase 2) was opened.
The northward A470 to Llandudno was opened later the same year. It was a local authority contract but awarded to the same contractors building the A55.
Work began in 1986 on a very large contract for the Glan Conwy to Conwy Morfa section, including Conwy Tunnel. The eastern part of this contract, extending to Llandudno Junction Interchange and including the flyover across the large roundabout at Glan Conwy, opened in 1990. (The western part including the tunnel was opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1991.)
