Gordano Interchange

The Gordano Junction is junction 19 on the M5 and sits at the southern end of the Avonmouth Bridge. It is a large partially signalised Roundabout Interchange which sits above the motorway, and is a very busy junction with the A369 being the main route in and out of Portishead, a large town on the Severn Estuary and the Portbury Docks, part of Bristols main port. Adding to the congestion the junction is also home to the Gordano Services, the first services southbound since the M4/M5 junction at Almondsbury.

Discussions have been had on how to relieve the junction, which is particularly congested during the morning and evening rush hours, but the only real options seems to be a new bridge to the west of the junction to carry through-A369 traffic, and so bypass the junction. However, this seems to be a relatively small volume of the traffic at the junction, so such a plan is unlikely to be cost effective.
