In 1966, the junction formed a temporary terminus for the M4 mainline, and all traffic was forced onto the M4 Hambrook Spur
By 1967, the junction was fully open.

The Hambrook Interchange is the junction between the M4 (junction 19) and the M32 (junction 0). It was built along with the first section of M32 in 1966, and was at the time a normal roundabout interchange. This has since been modified, with the circulatory carriageway converted to a teardrop shape, meaning that all traffic using the junction is forced onto the M32. It is one of the five consecutive junctions on the M4 to be with another motorway, which is the highest number of consecutive motorway-to-motorway junctions anywhere in the UK.
