Heanor, Derbyshire, is one of a chain of market towns in the Erewash Valley near to the border with Nottinghamshire. It was dependent on the coal industry but this has now changed to light engineering.
Heanor's main claim to fame was the 'American Adventure'. A theme park built on the site of Shipley colliery was opened in 1987. At first it was a major rival to such Parks as Alton Towers. It was signed from far and wide even the M1. The traffic queues were appropriate. However the owners went into liquidation and the site was finally closed in 2007. The County Council currently (2011) have the site on their books.
