Heaton Bridge is a steel girder bridge over the Manchester Victoria to Euxton railway and Middlebrook watercourse. It was built as part of Beaumont Road, the first section of the Bolton Bypass from A58 Wigan Road to A673 Chorley New Road. The road was officially opened on 18 June 1925 by Col. William Ashley. It was then the B6402. The bridge has a plaque showing the erection date of 1924. It is still the largest bridge in the Borough of Bolton.
Construction
The bridge has two underbridge girders of 45m and 23m. The steel was brought from Booths steelworks on Wigan Road in the town by steam tractor and trailer.
Refurbishment
In 2000 the bridge was re-strengthened. The bridge deck was replaced, the cross-bracing re-strengthened and barriers erected between the carriageway and footways. The scaffolding for the scheme cost £90,000. It is anticipated that more repairs will not be needed for 120 years.
