Herring Bridge, also known as the Third River Crossing, is the final bridge downstream on the River Yare on the A1154 in Great Yarmouth. It links A47 at Harfrey’s Roundabout to the port and the enterprise zone on the peninsula at the other side of the River Yare via A1243 South Denes Road.
It is a double-leaf bascule bridge and the road is S4. Construction started in January 2021. The bridge’s two leaves were manufactured in Belgium and shipped to Great Yarmouth by barge. The bridge became operational for river users in November 2023 and fully opened to road traffic on 1 February 2024. Contractor was a BAM Nuttall / Farrans Construction Joint Venture, contract value £121 million.
