Herrington Interchange is a junction on the A19 Sunderland bypass, providing access to south-western areas of the city and to Durham via the A690. It also enables access to Doxford International business park via a dual carriageway which is shown on some maps as the B1286, but is not signed as such on the ground.
The junction is a roundabout interchange with five arms and is controlled by traffic lights at peak times, when it can get very busy.
History
The junction was part of the Sunderland Bypass. It opened initially from the south with the section from Seaton Interchange in February 1972. The section northwards to A183 Chester Road Interchange opened on 8 May 1972. City Road was built later.
