Hickstead Bridge crosses the East River Adur on the A23 dual carriageway route. The crossing is adjacent to the 'All England Show Jumping Course'. The A23 is the major route from London to Brighton.
The bridge has been part of the main route to Brighton since well before the roads were numbered. In the 1930s it was replaced by a wider structure. The road became a dual carriageway in the 1990s.
