Highnam Corner is, despite appearances, a major junction (relatively) on the A40 west of Gloucester, where it meets the B4215. Most light traffic heading between Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye takes the route via Newent to meet the M50 at junction 3. The junction was altered in 2008 during the works on the A40 in order to increase capacity and provide better provision for buses. Before the junction was altered the B4215 heading towards Gloucester used to have a long merge into the A40 which was itself was originally one lane between the Highnam Roundabout until after the junction. There were also traffic lights controlling the eastbound A40 and the westbound right turn for the B4215. When the junction was altered traffic lights were added to the eastbound B4215, therefore eliminating the merge and meaning the A40 is now 2 lanes through the junction. Traffic lights were also added onto the eastbound left turn from A40 to B4215 as well as a crossing on the westbound A40.
