The Hindhead Crossroads was a notorious bottleneck in the road network at Hindhead, Surrey, where the A3 met the A287 at a set of traffic lights - the only ones between the M25 and the A27 on the south coast.
It was finally rendered obsolete by the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel in 2011. It is now a pair of mini roundabouts, with the eastern section being nothing more than a local road to access the Devil's Punchbowl National Trust car park.
Despite no longer being on a major route, the Crossroads still sees regular coach traffic from National Express, who take an amended route around Hindhead as a legacy to when it was on the A3.
The diversion of the A3 in 2011 reduced the number of vehicles using the crossroads by 50% in the five years to 2016, this combined with the conversion to a double roundabout reduced journey times on the A287 by up to six minutes at peak times [1].
